COACH’S CAN-DO…
When an athlete is in distress (melt down, angry, crying..)
1. ACKNOWLEDGE:
“I see you are upset with…. (this situation)”.
2. AFFIRM:
That makes sense. This was important to you.”
“I understand. You worked hard for this.”
“That’s OK. You have been under a lot of pressure lately.”
3. ASK:
“Is there anything I can do for you right now?”
“ What do you need to be able to pull it together?
“ We need to keep going, but can we talk about this later?”
Follow up with the athlete as soon as you are able. Repeat the above!
DON’T:
Minimize the situation.
Tell them to get it together/ get over it.
Ignore them (unless that is an agreement you have come to together)
Mock or use sarcasm
