COACH’S CAN-DO…

When an athlete is in distress (melt down, angry, crying..)

1. ACKNOWLEDGE:

  • “I see you are upset with…. (this situation)”.

2. AFFIRM:

  • That makes sense. This was important to you.”

  • “I understand. You worked hard for this.”

  • “That’s OK. You have been under a lot of pressure lately.”

3. ASK:

  • “Is there anything I can do for you right now?”

  • “ What do you need to be able to pull it together?

  • “ We need to keep going, but can we talk about this later?”

Follow up with the athlete as soon as you are able. Repeat the above!

DON’T:

  • Minimize the situation.

  • Tell them to get it together/ get over it.

  • Ignore them (unless that is an agreement you have come to together)

  • Mock or use sarcasm
